I've always known that AMD were the underdog, but I was rather amazed to read that their annual sales are still less than 10% of Intel's.

Two words: Centrino (you'd be surprised at how may people don't realise that PC cards and/or USB thingums can get them connected) and Xeon (which Intel charges a huge premium for and routinely sells eight-to-a-box).
